Big Carl’s biggest lift ends 2020 at Hinkley Point C

Big Carl’s biggest lift ends 2020 at Hinkley Point C

Big Carl, the world’s largest crane, has just completed its biggest ever lift at Hinkley Point C. The super-crane lifted a total weight of 575 tonnes to install the first of three massive prefabricated steel rings which form the reinforced cylinder around the nuclear reactor.

The 17m tall ring with a diameter of 47m – was lifted out of a bunker where it was constructed in factory conditions – one of the innovations to improve quality on the project. Big Carl reached out 160m to put it in place during a night lift – timed to take advantage of lighter winds during a four-day operation.

Despite the challenge of operating under Coronavirus restrictions, the final big lift of the year was one of many significant milestones achieved in 2020. These include the completion of the first 3.5km cooling water tunnels and the reactor base of unit two. The power station will help Britain reach Net Zero by producing reliable low carbon electricity for more than 6m homes.

Lift facts

  • The first steel containment ring weighs 382 tonnes – around the weight of a 747 Jumbo jet – lifting gear took the total lift weight to 575 tonnes.
  • The liner ring is the second of five pieces that make up the steel containment for each reactor, including the base and the dome.
  • Big Carl is 250m tall, moves on rail tracks and will eventually lift pieces weighing more than 1,000 tonnes.
  • The ring was gently placed on 96 hydraulic jacks which lowered the ring into its exact position.

Hinkley Point C Managing Director Stuart Crooks said: “This spectacular lift is a remarkable achievement in a year when everyone has had to make extraordinary efforts to keep the site and community safe from infection. The precision involved is like watch-making on an industrial scale.

“Our ability to maintain progress in such tough circumstances is a testament to the commitment of the workforce and our suppliers across Britain and the world.  Construction of Hinkley Point C’s two reactors continues to provide evidence that repeating an identical design improves quality and efficiency – something that will bring big benefits to Sizewell C in Suffolk.”

UK Government signs North Wales Growth Deal

The UK and Welsh Governments sign the North Wales Growth Deal, bringing jobs and investment to the region.

THOUSANDS of jobs will be created and the economy given a multi-billion pound boost after the ground-breaking North Wales Growth Deal was given the green light by both the UK and Welsh Governments.

Work will now begin on the five programmes that make up the £1bn Deal.

Led by North Wales Economic Ambition Board – a collaboration of the region’s six councils, two universities, two colleges and private sector representatives – the programmes are made up of 14 projects covering low carbon energy, innovation in high-value manufacturing, agri-food and tourism, digital connectivity and land and property.

Both governments have worked closely with stakeholders throughout the process and had earlier committed £240m – £120m each – to help bring the Deal to fruition.

Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart, Wales Office Minister David TC Davies and Ken Skates MS, Minister for the Economy and North Wales, signed the deal agreement on Thursday 17 December.

Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart said:

“It’s fantastic see an exciting and transformative economic deal being delivered across North Wales. We want to build back better from the pandemic and bring jobs and investment to our communities, which is why UK Government has already committed £120 million to this project.

The North Wales Growth Deal is an incredible opportunity for the region and for the wider Welsh economy. Working hand in hand with local government and business, we will ensure the growth deal unleashes the full potential of North Wales.

Their main objectives are to create up to 4,200 new jobs by 2036, support an uplift of £2bn-2.4bn for the economy over that same period, and deliver total investment of up to £1.1bn.

Among the first projects to get underway in 2021 is the £35m Morlais renewable energy scheme off the coast of Anglesey.

New competition to develop nuclear powered space station

WNF INDUSTRY NEWS

Wales Nuclear Forum: Industry News, keeping you informed of important updates and informative information in the sector.

New competition to develop nuclear powered space station

The British Interplanetary Society (BIS) has announced a major new competition which will see participants come up with the best ideas relating to the storage and handling of antihydrogen.

The chemical, can in theory, be used to generate nuclear power for use in space exploration technologies, and points the way to highly energetic propulsion systems, designed to reduce the transit time between solar system objects.

The competition has been sponsored by the Mirror Quark company, led by Alan Bond, a renowned British mechanical and aerospace engineer, and will welcome proposals from engineers, scientists and physicists over the next six months (closing date: 11th June 2021).

The participants who come up with the best new idea for storage, handling or manufacture of antihydrogen will be announced as the winners of the competition in October 2021, with first place being awarded a £3,000 cash prize. Second place will be awarded £1,500. £300 will also be available to the best submission by a member of the Student Technical Working Group (STWG), and a £200 prize will be awarded to the runner up by a member of the STWG.

If antihydrogen can be successfully handled, space exploration engineers will be able to replace the existing thermodynamic process of converting heat into electrical power, which is heavy and inefficient, with a nuclear power generating technology, which would be far more time and cost efficient.
