Viridian Consultants was presented with the prestigious Minister’s Award at the NDA Supply Chain Event last week.
The winners of this year’s six NDA Group Supply Chain Awards were announced to a packed audience in Manchester. The Minister’s SME award is selected from all submissions and recognises the value, flexibility and innovation that SMEs bring to the mission. It was awarded to Viridian Consultants for their ViridiScope® project entitled ‘Deployment of an innovative portable laser-sampling tool’.
ViridiScope® is a novel laser sampling tool for characterisation of materials in nuclear applications. ViridiScope® is robust and portable, and has been designed to be taken into areas of high activity. It can be operated manually or deployed on a remotely operated vehicle, where ViridiScope® provides a unique and innovative solution for the remote sampling of radioactive environments. Previously sampling of concrete has been done using a drill, hammer, chisel or shaver– a dirty process leading potentially to the spread of radioactively contaminated dust and exposure of workers to radiation dose. ViridiScope® has been demonstrated to stakeholders to be safer, cleaner, faster and more cost effective in a wide range of applications. The key aim of the nine-month ViridiScope® project was to overcome resistance to change, a significant barrier that is endemic in the nuclear industry, and gain acceptance of this new approach.
They achieved this by providing five sites undergoing decommissioning characterisation activities with the use of a ViridiScope® on-site for a period of deployment with a remotely operated vehicle where applicable, commercial in-situ counting equipment, training and support to allow them to fully test and assess the sampling tool in an active operational environment.
Professor Kym Jarvis, MD, Viridian Consultants says: ‘We are delighted to receive such as prestigious award from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. It is the culmination of five year’s work supported by Innovate UK and Sellafield Ltd. We are indebted to Magnox Ltd, LLWR Ltd, EDF Energy and Sellafield Ltd for providing the deployment opportunities and for supporting our application for the award. We are now talking to the companies about how ViridiScope® can be included in their toolbox for nuclear characterisation.
About Viridian Consultants:
Viridian Consultants’ three directors, Kym Jarvis, Susan Parry and John Williams, are responsible for developing this innovative tool. All three were involved in the site deployments, with two engineers employed on the project. Susan’s role was as day-today project manager and the technical expert in radioactivity and radioanalysis. John is the technical manager with responsibility for the technical
design, particularly for the evaluation, mitigation and abatement of radioactive contamination on ViridiScope®. Kym is MD and team leader at Viridian, as well as providing financial management and technical expertise on the project. With support from government innovation funding, Viridian is on its way to becoming the ‘go to’ company for nuclear characterisation sensors – which means
developing tools to sample and analyse radioactivity on decommissioning sites ‘safer, cleaner, faster and more cost effectively’.
